Interested in studying in Germany? Applications are now open for the CATS Fellowship in Berlin, Germany which is a fully funded program for international students. The fellowship lasts between six and twelve months. Fellows must be in Germany by September 2025, as the program will start then at the earliest.

The international fellowship provides a monthly payment, covers research costs, and pays for travel to and from Germany. There is also support available for family members. The CATS Fellowship is offered by the Centre for Applied Turkey Studies (CATS), based at the German Institute for International and Security Affairs (SWP) in Berlin. It supports researchers, think tank experts, and policy professionals whose work focuses on Turkey.

Fellows will be hosted at SWP in Berlin, where they will carry out independent research related to Turkish politics, society, or foreign relations.. Applicants who haven’t finished their PhD yet but have strong research experience on Turkey can also apply.

Scholarship Value/ Inclusions for CATS Fellowships in Berlin, Germany

  • Fellowships will last between 6 to 12 months.

  • The earliest start date is September 2025.

  • Fellows must attend the fellowship in Berlin.

  • Monthly grant: €2,800–€3,000, based on experience level.

  • Funding is provided for research trips.

  • Also covers Travel costs.

  • Economic Integration: Strong trade and investment relationships connect Turkey closely with the EU, making its economic stability and development highly relevant to Europe.

  • Regional Influence: Its political and economic influence is growing in areas such as the Caucasus, Central Asia, the Middle East, and Africa.
  • Migration Route: Turkey is a major hub for migration to Europe, both for transit and settlement.
  • Large Turkish Diaspora: Millions of Turkish-origin people live in Europe, shaping social and political dynamics.

Given Turkey’s significance and the changing global landscape, it’s essential for Germany and Europe to have a deep understanding of developments in Turkish politics, society, and foreign policy.

Eligibility Criteria

All international applicants can apply.
The fellowships are open to:

  • Experienced researchers

  • Members of think tanks

  • Policy professionals working on Turkey-related topics

  • Emerging scholars with a solid research foundation, including PhD candidates who are well advanced in their Turkey-related studies

How to Apply for CATS Fellowships in Berlin, Germany ?

Applications must be submitted as a single PDF file in either English or German. The PDF should include the following, in this order:

  • Cover letter (1 page): Include your preferred start date and the duration of your fellowship.

  • Project proposal (maximum 5 pages, 2 cm margins, 1.5 line spacing, 12pt Times New Roman):

    • Title and a detailed description of your research or project topic

    • Key research questions or project goals

    • Explanation of the academic and policy relevance

    • Overview of current research in the field

    • Summary of theoretical and methodological approaches

    • Bibliography

  • Curriculum Vitae (CV): Include a list of your academic publications.

  • Copies of academic transcripts and/or diplomas: No translation is required.
