Applications are now open for the YSEALI Academic Fellows Program 2026, a fully funded, 5-week exchange program in the United States. The program will be held in two cycles: Fall and Spring 2026, and selected fellows can choose to attend in either term. There is no application fee, and all costs are fully covered by the U.S. Department of State.
YSEALI Academic Fellows Program 2026 in USA
The Young Southeast Asian Leaders Initiative (YSEALI) Academic Fellows Program aims to develop leadership skills and foster stronger connections among young leaders from Southeast Asia. YSEALI Academic Fellows Program is open to both undergraduate and graduate students.
International students will participate in a five-week program hosted at one of twelve universities across the United States, where they will take part in academic classes, cultural activities, and leadership training. More details on eligibility, benefits, and how to apply are provided below.

Eligibility Criteria
- Applicants must be between 18 and 25 years old by the application deadline. However, exceptional candidates over the age of 25 may be considered if they meet all other eligibility criteria.
- Applicants should hold citizenship and currently live in one of these countries: Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Timor-Leste, or Vietnam.
- They should be currently enrolled as full-time or part-time undergraduate students at a college, university, or other higher education institution, or must have graduated with their undergraduate degree within the past four years.
- Proficiency in reading, writing, and speaking English is required.
- Applicants should not hold U.S. citizenship or permanent residency. They must also not be currently employed by the U.S. Government or have immediate family members working for U.S. embassies, consulates, USAID, or any related agencies.
- Additionally, individuals who have previously participated in the YSEALI Academic Fellows Program are not eligible to apply.
- They must be eligible to receive a U.S. J-1 visa. The visa fee will be paid by the program, so there is no cost to selected Fellows.

Complete the Online Application
Visit the official application portal and fill out the online form. You can save your progress and return to complete it before the deadline. -
Create an Account and Fill Out Required Details
Register an account on the platform, then provide your personal information, academic background, and confirm your eligibility. -
Select Your Preferred Theme and Program Timing
Choose your top preferences among the program’s themes (such as Civic Engagement, Environment, Entrepreneurship, or Governance). You’ll also indicate whether you’re available for the Spring cohort, Fall cohort, or both. -
Upload Supporting Documents
Prepare and upload the following:-

Write and Submit Short Essays
Respond to three essay questions (200–250 words each) explaining your motivation, leadership experience, and ideas for a community project you would implement after the program. -
Provide Two Letters of Recommendation
Ask two mentors, teachers, or supervisors who know your work well to write recommendation letters on your behalf. -
Agree to Program Terms
Review and sign the required consent and agreement forms before submitting your full application. -
Submit Your Application
Once all parts of your application are complete, submit the form before the deadline. Make sure everything is accurate, as no changes can be made after submission. -
Wait for Confirmation and Interview Invitation
After submission, you will receive a confirmation email. Shortlisted applicants may be invited for an interview conducted in English.
