Scholarship Value/ Inclusions for Honjo International Scholarship in Japan 2024 :

  • The scholarship funds will begin from the start of graduate school, typically in September or October 2024.
  • Recipients are not obligated to repay the funds they receive from Foundation.
  • The duration of the scholarship aligns with the shortest time needed to complete the intended degree:
    • ¥210,000 per month for 1 or 2 years
    • ¥190,000 per month for 3 years
    • ¥160,000 per month for 4 or 5 years
    • Once the payment period begins, it cannot be changed. Applicants with an enrollment period shorter than one year are ineligible.
  • Recipients will receive a travel grant to cover expenses for attending international conferences, based on our scholarship provision rules.
  • Scholarship recipients cannot concurrently receive any other scholarships from external sources.
  • While receiving our scholarship, recipients cannot engage in employment except for temporary jobs related to their studies, such as teaching or research assistantships, or international exchange roles like translators or interpreters.
  • Recipients must participate in individual interviews and events organized by the Foundation.
  • After completing graduate school, recipients are expected to actively engage in Foundation events.

Eligibility Criteria for Honjo International Scholarship in Japan:

To apply for the scholarship, you must meet the following:

  1. You must not be a citizen of Japan.
  2. You should be starting or already enrolled in a graduate school in Japan by September or October 2024. If you’re not enrolled yet but plan to start then, you can still apply. If you’re entering graduate school in spring 2024, apply for the spring scholarship program.
  3. Generally, students in professional graduate schools can’t apply, unless they can submit a research plan.
  4. Your enrollment period until graduation must be more than 12 months.
  5. If you’re applying for the PhD program, you must start it before you turn 35. For the master’s program, you must start before turning 30, with no exceptions.
  6. You need to have a strong desire to work in your home country in the future.
  7. You must understand and appreciate international friendships and attend events organized by the Foundation, participating as an alumni member.
  8. You should be able to have a basic conversation in Japanese, as interviews will be conducted in Japanese, with no exceptions.

How to Apply?

Make sure you’re qualified to apply. Go to the “online application system” and complete the form. Upload all the necessary files and documents. Starting from the Fall program, you’ll need to include a two-minute video where you talk about your research. After submitting your documents, you’ll get an application number, and a PDF of your application form will be created. Remember to save the PDF because you’ll need it when we announce the results on our website.

    • Academic transcript of the undergraduate course (including a transcript from College of Technology if applicable)
    • Academic transcript of the graduate school (if available)
  • Research Proposal
    • Description of research plans in Japanese (or English if confident)
    • Template available on the website
  • Recommendation Letter
    • From supervisor detailing academic performance, personal characteristics, and future potential
    • Can be from previous supervisor if familiar with academic background
    • Recommender may send directly to info@hisf.or.jp with applicant’s name and application number in file name
  • Admission Documents
    • Admission letter or letter of acceptance
    • Certificate of enrollment if already enrolled in graduate school
    • If admission letter is unavailable by April 30, 2024, enter probable date on Online application system and send to Foundation office via email once available
  • General Notes
    • Open all envelopes and upload documents as PDF files
    • Photocopied documents accepted
