Scholarship Value/ Inclusions for:

The 2025 AU Emerging Global Leader (EGL) Scholarship pays for all major costs at American University, including tuition, room, and board, for two international students who need a student visa (F-1 or J-1) to study in the United States. This scholarship is renewable for up to four years of undergraduate study, provided the recipients maintain satisfactory academic performance. AU Partial Scholarship:

Candidates for partial scholarships will be chosen from among the talented applicants who successfully complete the AU EGL scholarship process. If you are recommended for an AU EGL partial scholarship, you will be required to provide proof of additional funds, beyond the initial US$4,000, to cover the remaining costs not included in the partial scholarship.

Eligibility Criteria:

Eligible applicants must meet the following criteria:

  1. Background and Experience:
    • International students are welcome to apply.
    • Students from diverse backgrounds.
  2. Academic Requirements:
    • A minimum GPA equivalent of 3.8 out of 4.0 (or be in the top 10% of their graduating class) for grades 9-12.
  3. Language Proficiency:
    • TOEFL iBT score of 95+ (with all subscores 20 or above)
    • TOEFL paper-based score of 24+ per sub-score (taken after May 31, 2017)
    • IELTS score of 7.0+ (with all subscores 6.0 or above)
    • SAT Reading subscore of 33 or higher
    • SAT Digital version “Evidence-Based Reading and Writing” (EBRW) score of 630 or higher (as of March 2023)
    • ACT English score of 29 or higher
    • PTE score of 65 or higher
    • Duolingo English Test score of 125+ (with all subscores 115 or above)
    • Cambridge Assessment English score of 185 or higher.
  4. Current Enrollment:
    • Students who are currently enrolled in secondary/high school and are expected to graduate by June 2025.

How to Apply?

To apply, follow these steps:

  1. Submit Your Application:
    • Complete and submit the Common Application or Coalition Application, along with all required documents, by December 1, 2024.
  2. Provide Financial Documents:
    • Submit a bank letter and the AU Declaration of Finances Form (AU DFF), each showing a minimum of US$4,000. These documents can be uploaded through your applicant portal or emailed as PDF attachments to admissionsdocuments@american.edu. You can find examples of bank letters online.
  3. Submit English Proficiency Test Scores:
    • Send your official TOEFL, IELTS, Duolingo English, PTE, or Cambridge Assessment English test score results by December 1, 2024. The official score reports must be sent directly by the testing agency to American University, Undergraduate Admissions, in Washington, D.C. Note: Students are not allowed to submit their own test results.
  4. Complete Your Application Packet:
    • Ensure that all parts of your application, including supporting documents, are submitted by the deadline. Incomplete applications will not be considered.
