- A first-class average in the last two years of studies is required for eligibility.
- While students pursuing joint professional degree programs such as MD/Ph.D., DVM/Ph.D., or JD/Ph.D. are eligible, only the Ph.D. tenure will be funded.
- The research proposal must have a significant research component.
- The applicant must not be a faculty member at an institution that has a Vanier quota or any other institution. They must be granted leave for the Ph.D. program from their current institution to be eligible.
- Full-time enrollment is required, but exceptions can be made for students with disabilities or those supporting their families, who may enroll as part-time students.
- For part-time students, two months of study will be considered equivalent to one month of study for full-time students.
- Canadian Federal Government employees can be eligible if they take an unpaid leave from the government.
- If selected for multiple scholarships, they will need to choose only one grant after the selection process.
